Forever Chemicals & Microplastics

What the science says about PFAS and microplastics in your body — and the evidence-backed ways to reduce your burden. 'Forever' is a nickname, not a law of physics: clearance can be accelerated, and the molecules can be destroyed.

Not medical advice. Educational context only. Bile-acid sequestrants are prescription drugs with drug interactions — consult a healthcare professional before starting fiber supplements, changing diet, or donating blood, especially if you take medications or have a health condition.

The big picture in one paragraph

PFAS and microplastics are two different problems that share one strategy: stop the incoming load, then help the body clear what is already there. PFAS persist because the liver recycles them through bile — with serum half-lives of years — but clearance can be accelerated: regular blood or plasma donation (the strongest human evidence, ~30% PFOS reduction in a year), prescription bile-acid sequestrants that block recirculation (large declines in clinical studies), and gel-forming fiber with meals as a gentle daily habit. No supplement or herb has been shown to extract PFAS from cells. Microplastics, being solid particles, cannot be sweated out and have no proven clearance mechanism once embedded — so prevention (filtered water, no plastic in the microwave, glass storage, clean fish) is the primary lever, with a high-fiber diet speeding gut transit. And 'forever' is a nickname: engineered methods (SCWO, HALT, electrochemical, plasma, mechanochemical ball-milling, NaOH/DMSO) can actually cleave the C–F bond and destroy PFAS — the hard part is the scale of environmental dispersion, not the chemistry.
